BARLEY FRY BREAD
We grew up calling these scones, most people know it as fry bread.
YIELDS: 10 servings
INGREDIENTS
YEAST MIXTURE:
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
DOUGH:
- 4 Tbsp oil
- dash of salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 4 1/2- 5 cups barley flour
TOPPINGS:
- honey
- syrup
- jam
- powdered sugar
DIRECTIONS
- Mix yeast mixture together and let sit for 10 minutes.
- In a large bowl, mix together oil, salt, and water.
- After 10 minutes, add the yeast mixture and stir together.
- Begin adding the flour, one cup at a time, mixing thoroughly. Add only enough flour to make a soft dough.
- Knead for 5 minutes.
- On a floured surface, roll out individual scones, and let rise for 10 minutes.
- Fry in hot oil until golden brown, flipping half-way, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel.
- Serve warm with honey, syrup, jam, or powdered sugar.
- Enjoy!
TIP
This recipe can also be savory if you serve it like Navajo Tacos - taco meat, lettuce, beans, tomatoes, and sour cream.
